What Is a Registered Dietitian?
Dietitians are highly qualified health practitioners who have been trained in human physiology and development, management and the health of populations. Their training has been focused on the role of proper nutrition in promoting a healthy body and mind.
A Dietitian provides quality advice on nutrition, food, and healthy eating. A Dietitian’s main role in private practice is to counsel and support clients to make changes in their eating habits to promote health and prevent or manage chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Dietitians must be registered with Provincial Regulatory Bodies and are the only professionals who can use the titles Registered Dietitian, Professional Dietitian and Dietitian, which are protected by law. Look for the letters R.D., P.Dt. or D.Pt. after the name, indicating that the person is a registered member of the profession.

Healthy eating is all about balance. All foods can be a part of a healthy lifestyle, and our dietitians would like to show you how! We are passionate about helping people reach their individual health or sports performance goals and we would love to make Newfoundland and Labrador a healthier province.
Newfoundland and Labrador earned the lowest score of all the provinces in Canada on the most recent health report card (2015), getting a D minus. A huge concern highlighted from this report is the rate of obesity in our province. Our dietitians have focused much of their time in completing extra training in the area of weight loss and have developed professional weight loss programs. Through diet and lifestyle changes, we change the statistics!

What Is Sports Nutrition?
Whether you are striving for gold or would like to reach a personal goal, we can help! It doesn’t matter if you are an elite athlete, playing a recreational sport or being active to stay healthy; you want to perform at your best.
A dietitian can help you choose the optimal amount of food and the right type of foods, fluids and supplements for your specific sport. This will give you the fuel you need to be stronger, faster, and give you that extra edge! With the right food at the right time, you will perform better and recover faster, so you are ready for your next practice. We work with individual athletes or entire sports teams. We will work closely with you to tailor a program that best suits your needs!
A well-designed nutrition plan is often the element that is missing from an athletes training program

Our dietitians are offering a number of services to sports teams and coaches. We enjoy working very closely with coaches, teams and individual athletes to focus on nutrition in helping improve performance. Here are some of the ways we can be involved with your sports team:
Dietitian services offered:
Sports team nutrition screen
The team nutrition screen service is for members of an athletic team. It can help to identify athletes who are at risk for injury or poor performance due to dietary and lifestyle habits. Each team member completes an assessment form, which is reviewed by the Dietitian. A report will be provided on the individuals’ nutrition needs as it relates to their sport. All information collected is confidential, and team members are given the opportunity to follow up with individual nutrition guidance.

Metabolic Rate Testing
A Resting Metabolic Rate test measures the amount of energy required to maintain crucial life-sustaining processes – such as your heartbeat, respiration, and brain function – whilst at rest.
Your RMR measurement is made by analyzing the amount of oxygen your body uses and the amount of carbon dioxide your body produces.
This energy is expressed in calories per day, so to put it simply, an RMR test provides an indication of how many calories you burn at rest while doing nothing more than sitting in a chair.
Why get your Metabolic Rate tested?
Learn to eat to your metabolism
An accurate measure of RMR can help you eat the right amount of calories to reach your health goals. If you’re trying to lose fat, you might be inclined to starve yourself. However, this can be counterproductive and trigger the body into famine response mode. When this happens, your body will do what it can to hold onto valuable life-saving fat at the expense of metabolism-boosting muscle.
If you’re training hard trying to pack on muscle, you might not be eating enough calories to meet your RMR and training needs. If this is the case, then you might not be meeting your RMR needs AND exercise calorie requirements. Running on an empty stomach whilst training very hard can lead to exhaustion and loss of muscle.
Get precise and accurate results
Indirect calorimetry is a technique that measures how much oxygen your body consumes. Because there is a relationship between how much oxygen you consume and the number of calories burnt, we can accurately determine your metabolic rate.
Our equipment precisely measures the volume of air you breathe out and the difference in concentration of oxygen in the inspired and expired air. We also account for factors such as temperature, pressure, and humidity in order to get the most accurate results possible.
Get an individual measurement, rather than a guesstimate
A number of prediction formulas exist to estimate resting metabolic rate. These formulas are often used in gyms since indirect calorimetry may be impractical and require special training and expensive equipment. While prediction equations might be statistically valid across a large number of subjects in a scientific study, they may not necessarily be accurate when applied to an individual.
For example, if your estimated resting metabolic rate is 10% higher (2,200 calories) than an actual measurement of 2,000 calories, the extra 200 calories per day could translate to 9.5 kilograms of weight gain over one year.
